In August of 2016 I brought home the first puppy to make me a dogmom. She was a 2 month Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless) that I named Benito Juarez. Benito (or Benny) was my emotional support animal.
The following April, I brought Benny in from playing outside and noticed that his face was severely swollen with countless little bumps on and around his snout. I rushed him to the animal hospital and the veterinarians could not figure out what was wrong with him, we assumed the symptoms were because of fire ant bites or an allergic reaction for lack of a better diagnosis. They gave us medicine and sent us home.
At six months old, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Puppy Strangles. A week after his first birthday in August of 2017, I had to make the decision to put him to sleep due to organ failure.
