Training Adopted Dogs Takes Time

Luna and Heather's Story

We ended up just going to our local SPCA like we always do. We love visiting the animals there. We walked in and there were tons of puppies! It was cuteness overload. I was on one side looking at little black Border Collie mixes, and my fiancé was on the other side looking at little Lab mixes. Then he laid eyes on Luna.

She was so beautiful, but oh so afraid of him! Luna has 2 other sisters. We found out they were abused, starved and abandoned. They were two days away from death due to being so hungry. Luna was a little under 4 months old and she was huge for her age! They told us no one wanted her because she didn't look "puppy enough". Our hearts broke.

We ended up taking her to a special room in the building to have some one on one time with her to see if she was right for us. Judging by my fiancé's face, he had already picked her. We put her on the leash and had to carry her up a bunch of stairs because she was afraid to use them. Went into our little room and she exploded with joy! She became so happy and just ran in circles for minutes! It was the sweetest thing. I could see my fiancé just melting with love. He wanted her more than anything! So we got up, went down and filled out an application right away! It seemed like it took forever to hear if we got approved but when we got the call, we both cried like babies!

The day we brought her home, she had instantly became so much work! Sometimes I felt like we made a mistake and that we weren't ready for her or for how much work she was. She started becoming aggressive towards other dogs and afraid of everyone. It was just a lot! But, we took the time to make things right. She didn't ask to be this way and we couldn't give her away. We trained and trained and trained! We found her a trainer and worked with her. Fast forward to a few years later and she's still ours and we are so in love with her. She's almost 3 years old now and she's still work but we couldn't have asked for a better dog! She loves protecting us and loving us! She's my best friend. She makes me laugh so much and she's there during my anxiety attacks. Always by my side!
