Charlie and Alex's Story
My boyfriend and I were at our local farmers market. I was pushing Charlie in a stroller because they didn't want dogs running around, so it was either that or carry him. It was a pretty hot day so I pulled the shade guard over the stroller and we kept walking around. To my surprise I saw my dad in the distance and started to wave at him. My father and I don't have the closest relationship so, prior to this, the last time I saw him was almost a year ago. I was really excited to run into him so he could meet Charlie. As my boyfriend and I started to approach him I notice the only thing my dad kept looking at was the stroller. He would look at the stroller, look at my boyfriend, look at the stroller, then look at me. He had the most confused look on his face.
I walked up to him and gave him a hug. Since the stroller still has the shade guard, he still couldn't see into it. I tell him I'm so excited to see him and that I have someone for him to meet. At this point my dad looks like he's going to pass out. "You're kidding me, right? When did this happen?" He has a whole mix of emotions going on as I tell him I want him to meet his new grandson. I tell him "Dad, this is Charlie, my new baby."
My dad reaches back, looking for something to lean against, because he's clearly about to pass out. My boyfriend can't keep a strait face anymore and starts to chuckle. I pull the shade guard off and pull out my paw baby Charlie. We burst into laughter. My dad's entire demeanor changes; he lets out a sigh of relief and starts to chuckle as he shakes his head. "What's wrong with you? Why are you pushing a dog in a stroller?"
I will never forget my dad's face. He ended up hanging out with us for the rest of the day and he even held Charlie. I'll never forget that day. My dad and I hadn't laughed that hard together in a long time.
